An Evaluation Study on Be-with Bereavement Support Service for Newly Bereaved Persons in Hong Kong
Research Conducting Period: 2018 - 2021
Report Published Date: June 2021
Endless Care Services of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals established Bereavement Support Service in 2012. Each year, the Service provides free funeral consultations, assistance in handling funeral matters and providing emotional support to nearly 300 cases. Its aim is to alleviate the grief and stress caused by the loss of loved ones and help bereaved persons adapt to their new lives.
In 2018, the Service commissioned the Department of Social Work of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, to conduct a research study on the service's effectiveness. The study examined the service through questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews. The research findings revealed that the majority of users and beneficiaries of the Service were grassroots citizens and older adults, with an average age of 59 years old. Most of them had lost their spouses. Nearly 50% of service users had a monthly income below HK$10,000, and they were primarily unemployed or retired individuals. Additionally, 35% of service users were living alone. In contrast, among the non-service users interviewed, only 10% were living alone. This reflects the added pressure, grief, and sense of loneliness faced by those who live alone while dealing with funeral matters, highlighting the need for more community support. The intervention provided by the Service is particularly crucial for socially isolated individuals with limited economic resources.
The study also found that bereaved persons faced stress mainly due to the complex procedures involved in funeral arrangements, unfamiliarity with the necessary formalities and funeral rituals, and a sense of confusion when faced with the wide variety of funeral products available in the market. These challenges were particularly difficult for older adults and individuals with limited mobility. Furthermore, due to cultural taboos and the belief that one should not discuss funeral matters openly, bereaved persons often hesitate or are reluctant to seek help, leaving them to deal with their grief and funeral arrangements alone.
