Content: To understand the relationship between loneliness and mental health of elderly, Elderly Services Section of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) and Sau Po Centre on Aging, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), has conducted a “Say ‘NO’ to Loneliness” survey across the territory.

The research study objectives are to explore the related factors of elderly loneliness and to advocate anti-loneliness strategies. In addition, the activities that the Hong Kong elderly mostly require the companionship from young generations are examined and the top five specified events are “Having surgery”, “Celebrating traditional festivals”, “Celebrating birthdays”, “Tomb-sweeping” and “Being hospitalized”.

Through this research, TWGHs and HKU recommend good practice to strengthen intergenerational support and communication, thus alleviating seniors’ loneliness.
